Jay White on dojo squats

A first-person reference for the often-repeated 500-squat story.

Also called: NJPW · 500 squats · Young Lion · Switchblade

What White actually said

In a March 2018 Sporting News interview, Jay White says he still does squats but no longer performs 500 fast bodyweight squats at a time, as he had in the dojo. His wording matters: he describes an earlier workload, not a current daily requirement for everybody.

What the account leaves open

The interview does not establish sets, rest periods, weekly frequency, technique criteria, or how a beginner progressed to that volume. It also does not support a “250 before midday” rule.

Study prompt

Compare this account with Kevin Knight’s LA Dojo recollection. Write down the speaker, the time period, and the exact scope of each claim. Different experiences need not describe the same program.

Coaching discussion

Ask your coach which conditioning work supports your current ring sessions. A useful log records quality and recovery as well as repetitions. The advanced label here describes the reported volume; it is not a challenge to attempt it.
